Renowned for their luxury, highly technical materials and construction we take a look at and review the ASSOS Habu Mille_S7 tight. As with any of ASSOS’s clothing items two points come to mind when you are shopping their range; performance and comfort and this is no different with their new Habu bib-tights.

    First Impressions

If you are in the market for a pair of tights this winter whether buying mail order or in your local Independent Bike Shop the best first impression a pair of tights can make is a fit that instantly feels right; and ASSOS have hit the nail on the head with their size and fit here.

Size wise they are perfect and in keeping with all ASSOS items whether you compare to their racingFit (equipe) or comfortFit (mille). My size Medium fitted perfectly with me having a 34in leg and 32/33inch waist. The Habu reviewed here are based around their mille cut offering a more regular relaxed fit to fit a wider range of sizes.

    Construction

Construction wise again, ASSOS has hit the nail on the head with the Habu Tight, using their preparatory RX Heavy fabric they have made a tight that is soft, water resistant and highly insulating to the extent you forget you have them on. Unlike the LL.Mille tight that use one layer of the RX heavy and one layer of the Medium over the knee, the Habu Mille uses a single layer all over, this does a number of things, the soft, stretchy fleece conforms to every part of your legs, they feel warm and luxurious without hot and cold spot. The single layer helps maintain a more constant temperature as well as adding an impressive water-resistant finish.

The heart of any cycling short/tight is the pad or chamois, a good one makes riding almost effortless, a poor pad makes you wonder why you even cycle. As expected with the ASSOS brand the new S7 Mille pad offers the comfort and support needed for hours in the saddle. The foam pad base varies in thickness (8mm max) and density taking all pressure away from the saddle, ASSOS has also applied their Golden Gate technology where by the chamois is only attached at the front and the back, this allows the middle of the chamois to move independently from the tight, dramatically reducing irritation. A technology that is 100% effective.

Through-out the tight there is a smattering of classy touches, the bib-straps are a wide and supportive elastic found throughout the ASSOS range and a mesh back with printed detailing helps your back breath. The overall look of the short is minimalist and understated with minor reflective detailing for low light and night riding

    On the Road

Winter Bib-tights are complicated items of clothing coming in a variety of fits, materials and construction methods from every clothing manufacturer out there and all have differing results.

Here is why the Habu Mille Tights are my new winter go-to winter tight.

Firstly, a size Medium is a size Medium, simples. Gone are all my size large Castelli items, it feels good to be riding a item of clothing that fits extremely well in a size you would have expected, none of the up or down sizing so credit to ASSOS for getting that perfect.

Riding in the tights are an absolute dream, the RX heavy fabric is very warm and fits around your legs perfectly. Not once have I wished for a heavier fabric or added warmth around the knees, the tights are perfect, even when riding at or below freezing. Admittedly I do run a little warm but even at freezing point if tights carry their warmth then you know you’re on to a winner. After a number of washes the water-resistant finish is still there adding another protective dimension to the tights.

Between myself and my riding mates, we have always been in agreement that ASSOS chamois are the best in the industry. Whether you use the equipe-S7 insert or the mille_S7 insert you will never have felt comfort like it. The Habu uses the latter and is perfect for anything up to or over 5 hours, as you can see with my recent ride on Strava.

The main thing to consider about The ASSOS Habu Tight is the price, they certainly aren’t cheap at £165 however, they aren’t the most expensive tight on the market, in fact they are the cheapest in the ASSOS range. In this case you get what you pay for, particularly when comparing it to the Castelli Sorpasso 2 that retails at a similar £150. For a £15 increase you get a product that has a superior fit, more comfortable Chamois and a water-resistant finish, something that the Sorpasso has never had.

    Verdict

The ASSOS Habu mille Tight is currently my pick of the ASSOS range. It offers a fantastic introduction into the ASSOS winter clothing range with a fit, performance and comfort that simply can’t be matched by any of their competitors. If you are after a true do-it-all tight then you will not be disappointed.
