HJC IBEX Helmet First Impression

If you haven’t heard of the HJC helmet brand before then it’s understandable, however this little-known cycling brand has been involved in making Motor Cycle Helmets since 1971, becoming an expert in constructing strong, lightweight helmets. Having 45 years commitment to this level of performance has allowed them to transfer smoothly into the cycling market, releasing a range of helmets that are both highly functional and good looking.

Mention anything aero dynamic in the cycling industry, ears prick up, this is the case with the IBEX helmet from HJC. The new aero offering from the Korean brand is remarkably competitively priced coming in at £179.99, compared to its competitors Giro’s Vanquish (£239) Synthe (£224) and Kasks Protone at £199 price wise, its nice to have some change from £200 in the case of the HJC.

But why IBEX?

HJC is one on the only companies that have their own wind tunnel testing facility. This means several things, when designing a range of helmets, they can work specifically on improving aerodynamics, ventilation and noise, key factors that culminate in an efficient, comfortable and safe helmet. Within the aerodynamic design, HJC has implemented Venturi Dynamics. To maximise air flow pressure differences between the front and rear of the helmet pull air through and out the exhaust, optimising ventilation. Along side this air flow is a channel or ‘optimum air channel’ to be precise, within the internal construction is an air passage that depending on speed helps guide air over the head aiding optimum circulation.

Embedded within the EPS core is an engineered skeletal frame designed to hold its structure upon impact, this skeletal frame also adds rigidity if the impact is repeated. The exterior of the helmet features a technology called In-Mould, this is a method of binding the EPS interior with a solid Polycarbonate shell adding more conformed strength. By binding these two layers HJC has added strength and protection, reinforcing the soft EPS foam core. Visually it also makes the shell cleaner and far more durable in the long run.


The Fit

If your new to cycling advising sizing isn’t always the easiest thing to do other that physically measuring your head with a soft tape measure then refer to the manufactures size guide. In this case I can however compare it to a helmet its designed to compete with, the Giro Synthe. For reference my head is 56cm riding a Medium in Giro, this compares very well with the IBEX. Both helmets have a nice rounded oval shape, little pressure on the sides or the temple even when fastened tight. Adding comfort is the popular X-STATIC® padding; utilising silver partials to inhibit the growth of bacteria, preventing the horrible smells of old, simply wash to keep your padding fresh.


Another nice feature of the IBEX is how light it feels on your head coming in at 220g, HJC have worked tirelessly to produce a lightweight helmet but keep the thickness, density and shapes require to product a market leading helmet.

As with every helmet sold in the UK, the HJC IBEX is certified with a European CE EN1078


If you are after a lightweight, well vented aero helmet and the price isn’t necessarily an issue then its worth looking at the HJC IBEX helmet or the HJC range. The premium, almost bespoke finish of the IBEX is impressive, utilising extensive aero dynamic testing, venturi dynamics and 16 air flow vents it makes the IBEX a pleasure to wear with its for racing, training or impressing out local club run.
