FIFA is currently evaluating the possibility of moving the start time for the upcoming match between England and Mexico to earlier on Sunday. This decision stems from concerns over potential weather disruptions, including flooding, according to a source.
Local reports indicate that the World Cup clash, originally set for 6 PM local time (1 AM BST), could be adjusted to noon local time (7 PM BST). This change is being considered due to the threat of thunderstorms in the area.
The Football Association (FA) is urgently seeking clarity regarding the situation. The news emerged just as Thomas Tuchel and his team completed their training in Kansas City around 1 PM Central Time. The FA was taken aback by the revelation, having learned about it through media channels rather than any official communication.
Officials at the FA expressed their dismay at the timing of such a potential change, especially considering the impact it could have on traveling England supporters, many of whom have arranged their arrivals in Mexico City for Sunday morning.
England’s team is scheduled to depart from Kansas City to Mexico City on Friday afternoon to accommodate FIFA’s request for a training session at a site specific to the venue on the day prior to the match.
When asked about the potential rescheduling, Morgan Rogers stated, “We’ll be ready regardless of the time. The earlier the better because you want to play. There is enough thinking about what is going to happen and the buildup – you just want to play the game. Getting that adrenaline out there will help us and get us going and playing. We’re looking forward to it whatever the time is. We’ll deal with it as best as possible. It’s another obstacle to get over.”
Marcus Rashford echoed similar sentiments, saying, “I think for us it’s the same, how we prepare for the game, it has to be the same, we have to be focused, we have to be ready for anything. I think it’s one of the strengths of the group, everyone included, the players, the staff, we’re ready for whatever challenges get thrown at us. Obviously it’s not ideal but also it doesn’t matter.”
Earlier this week, Mexico’s round of 32 match against Ecuador faced delays due to rain, while France’s group match against Iraq in Philadelphia was disrupted for two hours because of thunderstorms.
FIFA, when contacted, did not confirm or deny if the kick-off time had indeed been altered.
