The Importance of Supporting the US Men’s Soccer Team Amid Political Tensions

Some Americans are reluctant to cheer for the US at the World Cup. They shouldn’t be | Alexander Abnos

The US men’s national soccer team is on the verge of making history. With just one more win needed to match their best showing in the modern World Cup era, the team is displaying an extraordinary blend of talent and enthusiasm. Their recent victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina has placed American soccer front and center in the national conversation.

For those who are ardent supporters of US soccer, the choice to back this team during such a critical juncture seems almost self-evident. It’s like asking oneself, “greatest country in the world”

Yet, many new supporters may be hesitant, particularly those who only engage with the sport during the World Cup. This hesitation is understandable, especially in light of recent events, including the US baseball team’s use of military imagery, which has painted them as a less-than-favorable representation. Additionally, the US men’s hockey team was seen socializing with powerful figures during the Olympics, seemingly indifferent to the challenges faced by their counterparts on the women’s team, who also celebrated a gold medal.

Moreover, various non-sporting issues contribute to the reluctance some Americans feel toward supporting their national squad. Discomfort often arises from the government’s actions over the years, encompassing multiple generations and even the very foundation of the nation. Despite the assertion that the US is the “greatest country in the world,” many lives have been negatively impacted or lost due to government policies. While I acknowledge your concerns, I encourage you to hold those truths alongside other perspectives.

Global Perspectives on National Pride

It’s crucial to note that the US is not alone in facing this dilemma. Many Germans found it difficult to celebrate their national team’s achievements for decades post-World War II. A modern parallel can be drawn with Iran, where the fanbase is deeply divided regarding Team Melli’s ties to an oppressive regime that has forced many to flee. Does the Iranian national team represent their government or the people of Iran, known for their hospitality and love of soccer? Recently, fans made their feelings known by booing the national anthem and wearing protest shirts, yet when the team celebrated a goal, excitement erupted in cities such as Los Angeles and Seattle.

In the US, we must ask ourselves: why should we cheer for our national team while contending with a government that many find objectionable both at home and abroad? How do we put aside thoughts of ICE raids, military interventions, and the mistreatment of fellow citizens to embrace a sense of patriotism during a soccer match?

Reasons to Cheer for the Team

There are many compelling reasons to support this particular group of players. They reflect the diversity that is a hallmark of the nation, and their playing style has been significantly influenced by a coach who describes himself as “200% Argentinian.” It’s important to remember that, similar to the Olympics, these athletes have devoted years of hard work and personal sacrifice to reach the pinnacle of their sport. Many of them either reside in the US, have grown up here, or opted to represent this country over others. Some may even play for local teams and share your culinary preferences—just wait until you hear about Weston McKennie’s fondness for ranch dressing. Unlike many in the soccer community, a part of their experience is easily relatable to Americans, independent of government actions.

Ultimately, my strongest case for supporting this team is that you’re not merely endorsing their identities; you’re celebrating the unity that sports can promote. The players, coaches, and staff, along with their diverse political opinions, are transient. They will come and go; some will shine, while others may stumble. You may resonate with one player’s ideology while disagreeing with another’s, depending on how openly they express their viewpoints. In time, they will pave the way for a new generation of athletes.

The Essence of Sports and Community

The true beauty of international soccer lies in the shared experience with those around you—your neighbors, friends, colleagues, and even the cashier at your local store. During a moment of victory, whether it be against Belgium or another rival, you will find countless individuals nearby rejoicing in pure elation, an emotion that sports uniquely evoke. These people have been part of your life long before this World Cup journey began and will continue to be there afterward. While you might not share much in common with many of them, these moments possess the potential to foster connections, creating a sense of togetherness that may not have existed prior.

As the US men’s soccer team forges ahead in this World Cup, they embody and redefine the very principles this country stands for. You are free to reject these ideals.

But when joy is at stake, how could you?
