Collina Defends Refereeing Ahead of France-Morocco Quarter-Final Clash

World Cup 2026: France v Morocco quarter-final buildup, Collina defends refereeing – live

Pierluigi Collina has pushed back at criticism of officials.

The anticipation builds as we shift our focus to the upcoming quarter-final between France and Morocco. The hope is to avoid discussions about officiating by the end of the match, as that would detract from the excitement.

Meanwhile, Rob Draper has delved into the journey of Michael Olise, tracing his path from Hayes to the global stage of football.

“We were playing Sparta Prague in the European Under-21 Cup,” Flanagan recounts. “I got there at half‑time. Michael was about 17 and on the bench. I sat in front of [the former Crystal Palace and West Ham player] Hayden Mullins, who used to work for us and who I got on well with. Michael came on with 17 minutes to go. Within five minutes Hayden leaned over to me and said: ‘Who the fuck is that?!’ I just started laughing. And Hayden said: ‘Come on then, tell me, where did you find this one?’ So I explained the story …”

Pierluigi Collina, the chief of refereeing at FIFA, has come out in support of the referees following the contentious officiating during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Egypt in the World Cup round of 16. He firmly rejected claims of bias, asserting that match officials operate independently.

In an interview released on inside.fifa.com on Thursday, Collina acknowledged that while criticism of referees is an inherent part of football, questioning their integrity is unwarranted, especially after Egypt voiced concerns about the officiating post-defeat.

“Constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport,” Collina explained. “Nobody can question the integrity of the Fifa World Cup match officials… Nobody can claim that Fifa refereeing can be influenced by anyone, not even by the Fifa president (Gianni Infantino).”

Although Egypt faced elimination from the tournament, they contended that they were treated unjustly after Argentina rallied from a 2-0 deficit to clinch victory with a last-minute goal from Enzo Fernandez.

Coach Hossam Hassan suggested that the referee may have faced pressure to favor Argentina, while the Egyptian Football Association expressed concerns over several critical incidents that raised doubts about the consistency and fairness of the decisions affecting the game’s outcome.

Egypt argued that Mostafa Zico’s second-half goal was wrongly disallowed due to what they termed a non-existent foul in the buildup. They were also outraged that a challenge on Mohamed Salah went unpunished just before Argentina’s decisive goal.

Collina defended the VAR decision to overturn Zico’s goal, stating that it correctly identified a foul committed by Marwan Attia on Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez during the attacking sequence. “several key incidents raised serious concerns and left profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions that directly influenced the course of the game.” he noted. “We believe that a foul is a foul,”

Regarding the decision not to award Egypt a penalty prior to Argentina’s winning goal, Collina explained that both the referee and VAR deemed the contact between Salah and Julian Alvarez to be “Regardless of whether the foul appears’obvious’, if the referee did not see it on the field of play, the VAR can intervene.” He clarified, “Stepping on an opponent’s foot is a foul, whereas a defender who touches the ball first and then makes normal football contact has not committed a foul,”

As noted in the Flight of the Conchords: “It’s business time.”

The lengthy tournament has felt drawn out, but the competition now seems to have reached a critical phase. Several top teams have exited, while others have faced unexpected challenges, leaving us with eight elite contenders.

The quarter-final clash between France and Morocco promises to be an exciting encounter. Didier Deschamps’s squad has consistently displayed their superiority throughout the tournament, despite having to endure a tough match against a struggling Paraguay side.

Morocco’s journey has been more favorable, especially after their victory over the Netherlands. However, they face a significant challenge against France, having previously lost to them in the semi-finals four years ago. As they progress towards the final four, they have already eliminated Spain and Portugal, demonstrating their readiness to compete at a higher level.

There will be further updates from the USA as the tournament unfolds.
