England’s football team has been facing significant challenges at the World Cup, not just in terms of competition but also due to the extensive travel distances they have incurred. Their journey has far surpassed that of their competitors, raising concerns about the impact on player performance.
The Football Association opted to establish England’s base in Kansas City, even though the squad is not playing any matches there. This decision was made to minimize flight durations for their games. However, it has resulted in the team making round trips of at least 670 miles for each match, based on direct measurements from their training facility to the venues.
With matches in Foxborough, East Rutherford, and Mexico City, the team has faced round trips exceeding 1,100 miles each way. On average, England has covered approximately 1,842 miles over their first five encounters, equivalent to a round trip from London to Lisbon. This extensive travel has not only accumulated more miles than France has overall, but also left them with over 3,000 miles more than their next opponent, Norway.
The shortest return trip that England has completed was still longer than any journey made by the French team. Additionally, England has played all five of their matches in different locations, with Miami Gardens set to host their next game against Norway on Saturday. In contrast, Norway has managed their travel by staying in one location, Greensboro, North Carolina, during the group stage before transitioning to various cities for the knockout rounds.
Some teams have strategically chosen their accommodations, reaping rewards for their foresight. For instance, Belgium’s base in Renton, Washington, is merely 10 miles from Seattle Stadium, where they played their first two knockout games. Argentina, also based in Kansas City, played both their opening game and quarter-final there. England had anticipated topping their group, which could have influenced their travel planning. If they had chosen a base closer to Atlanta, for example, they would have been conveniently located for their last-32 match, significantly reducing their travel during the group stage.
While travel logistics play a crucial role, numerous factors influence the selection of a base camp. Assessing the disadvantage of extensive travel compared to other teams is complex. However, as England faces three round trips longer than France’s total distance, this could potentially impact their performance should they progress to a final showdown.
