Harry Kane has highlighted that Thomas Tuchel’s critical observations about England’s performance after their quarter-final win over Norway in Miami stem from the team’s struggle to turn their training success into matchday execution.
The England captain suggested that Tuchel’s comments were intended to keep his squad focused as they gear up for the semi-final showdown against Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday, remarking, “he knows as much as anyone that it’s not as simple as that … he’s trying to drag it out of us.”
Throughout the tournament, Tuchel has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with his team’s lack of unity and composure. Following the match against Norway, he didn’t hold back, stating he was unhappy with the overall performance “he knows as much as anyone that it’s not as simple as that … he’s trying to drag it out of us” The German coach criticized the numerous technical mistakes and the team’s lethargy, asserting they were “Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kind of conditions against Erling Haaland, [Martin] Ødegaard, [Antonio] Nusa, [Alexander] Sørloth.” to achieve victory.
Jude Bellingham, who scored both goals in England’s 2-1 extra-time victory, responded to Tuchel’s critique with some annoyance. “When he sees us train and sees the closeness and what we can do, especially with the players we have, the way we attack, our one‑on-ones and the skills … he just wants to see that version of us,” he said, adding in a subsequent post-match interview, “He knows as much as anyone that it’s not as simple as that, we’re playing against good opposition and good teams. He’s trying to drag it out of us and we know ourselves we have another level that we can reach. “We haven’t seen that yet. We’ve shown it in glimpses. Against Norway it was in glimpses. We haven’t had full control that we would like and I feel we can have. But at this stage of the tournament you are playing against the best teams in the world. We’ll be playing against one of the best teams in the world in the semi-final. “The most pleasing thing is that we are in a semi-final and we still feel like we can improve. I don’t think it is something to get really over the top about. We are showing a lot of good things – the way the boys defended as a team against Norway, the way we attacked … we still had some really good moments. And Jude stepped up for us with another couple of goals.”
On one hand, Tuchel’s remarks can be viewed as a bold management strategy following one of England’s most significant victories in World Cup history. However, they also align with Tuchel’s well-known pursuit of perfection.
Kane sought to diffuse any tension arising from the situation, stating, “I know this is going to be a topic from now until the next game,” He acknowledged, “We know we can play better but ultimately we are in a semi-final of the World Cup and that has not always been the case for this national team so we have to enjoy it. “It was tough out there against Norway with the heat and humidity. We can play better on the ball. We know that for sure. But right now we want to enjoy this. The preparation will come for the next game and we will try to improve with the ball as much as possible. “This has been an extremely successful era of our national team, getting to semi-finals and finals, and we want to get over the line. That is the missing piece now. We’ve been together for six weeks and shown every bit of desire for the badge. We’re going to need an even bigger push now for the last week or so.”

Before the Norway match, Tuchel had claimed that England “need to play better,” identifying various areas for enhancement. These included improving their buildup play, breaking through the opponent’s high press, spending more time in the final third, and refining their counter-pressing strategies.
Tuchel also noted that his players were overthinking situations in possession, which resulted in missed opportunities for advancing play. There remains an understanding that Tuchel must make adjustments regarding the setup of an international squad, as the time available to work with players is considerably less than in club football. Nevertheless, these compromises frustrate him.
