Thomas Tuchel has expressed his confidence in Harry Kane, stating that the forward is in exceptional form and primed to guide England to World Cup success. After struggling with fitness in previous international competitions, the Bayern Munich striker has had a stellar season in Germany, showcasing peak physical readiness in recent training sessions.
To adapt to the scorching temperatures anticipated during the World Cup, England has traveled to Florida for acclimatization, conducting their preparations under challenging weather conditions in West Palm Beach.
Tuchel emphasizes the importance of recovery, acknowledging that England’s aspirations hinge significantly on Kane maintaining his health. Despite facing difficulties with form and fitness at Euro 2024, Kane remains a pivotal figure for the team, receiving strong support from his manager as they gear up to face New Zealand in Tampa for their first warm-up match on Saturday.
“He looks in top shape,” Tuchel stated. “He appears lean, sharp, and is training at the highest intensity. In our defensive drills today, he was at the forefront, setting the pace. His experience with Bayern Munich’s high-pressure style has him leading by example. I believe he is in the best condition possible.
“He is fully prepared. We have no reason to worry about him, even with the June heat. Throughout this week, he has demonstrated his readiness. He is our key player.”
The friendly against New Zealand is scheduled to start at 4 PM local time (9 PM BST), with forecasts predicting a temperature of 32°C and humidity around 40%. Tuchel plans to utilize two different lineups for each half at the Raymond James Stadium, focusing on enhancing the team’s stamina.
“Some players require more physical exertion, while others need to rest,” Tuchel explained. “We will aim to give everyone 45 minutes. Our goal is to keep Harry fit and maximize his playing time, but ideally, we won’t need him on the field for the full duration of every match.”
Tuchel indicated that Ollie Watkins will serve as Kane’s backup, with Ivan Toney considered a versatile option for specific scenarios. “I see Ollie as the ideal substitute for Harry when we decide not to start him,” Tuchel remarked. “He can maintain the intensity and pressure we need.
“Ivan is more of a finisher for us, potentially drawing attention away from Harry. He excels in the box and is a reliable penalty taker. His training performance has been excellent, and I’m delighted we chose him. His attitude is outstanding. While we have various options, Harry unquestionably remains our primary striker.”
Addressing concerns regarding the playing surface in Tampa, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tuchel remained optimistic. “We have a groundskeeper dedicated to maintaining the field, and I trust it will be satisfactory,” he noted. “It’s a football field, and we’ve been informed that it’s in good condition. I did see a photo that raised some concerns, but I believe we can assess it when we arrive.”
England’s final warm-up match is set against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday. Their first Group L match won’t occur until they face Croatia in Dallas on June 15, allowing ample time for the team to acclimatize to the hot climate. Notably, players from Arsenal will miss the New Zealand encounter, having been granted late arrival due to last weekend’s Champions League final.
