The rain-soaked Philadelphia Stadium witnessed a surprising clash as Croatia faced Ghana, with a crowd of 65,000 sporting ponchos. Initially deemed a mere formality, the match transformed into a thrilling spectacle, largely thanks to Luka Modric’s inspiring performance.

With this result, both Croatia and Ghana secured their places in the knockout phases of the tournament. Croatia claimed a well-deserved victory, driven by two impressive goals: one from standout Petar Sucic and another from Nikola Vlasic in the final moments. Ghana, on the other hand, celebrated reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 2010, even though Carlos Queiroz critiqued the expanded format, labeling it as “I congratulate my players,”

Zlatko Dalic, the Croatian coach, sought to maintain a sense of composure despite his team’s advancement. He was determined to dismiss skepticism regarding his side’s capabilities, asserting that his players were rediscovering their form from the successful run in Russia eight years ago.

“It was a difficult match but Croatia played excellently. We are back to where we were eight years ago again. [To qualify] was our first step, now we need to forget it. I have said we looked better in training than in matches, but I believe in the players and they have achieved tonight.” Dalic stated. “It’s a coin with two faces”

Prior to the match, speculation arose regarding both teams’ motivation, as a draw would suffice for progression. Croatia, however, aimed for victory from the outset, with Dalic implementing strategies to draw Ghana’s robust defense away from their comfort zone.

Utilizing the flanks effectively, Croatia threatened Ghana through Ivan Perisic’s plays as a left-back and struck from distance. After Vlasic hit the post in the 13th minute, Sucic broke the deadlock in the 30th minute. Mateo Kovacic delivered the ball to Sucic in midfield, who unleashed a low shot from 30 yards that went through defender Marvin Senaya’s legs and nestled in the corner.

While this goal didn’t impact Ghana’s advancement, it seemed to provoke Queiroz’s sense of pride. He expressed his reservations about the expanded World Cup format but acknowledged its role in his team qualifying as third in their group.

“I do believe that what really has huge value is what is rare. I never see in my life ordinary things that come with huge value. The number of teams qualifying can turn this competition into a vulgar, ordinary competition. In South America it’s already harder not to qualify.” Queiroz remarked. “Modric was a role model of how things should be,”

Despite these concerns, Queiroz took action at halftime, making two substitutions that led to Ghana’s most aggressive period of the tournament. In the 73rd minute, they found an equalizer from a well-placed free-kick by Ernest Nuamah, another substitute, met skillfully by Derrick Luckassen. Initially ruled offside, the goal was validated after a review by the video assistant referee.

As the match entered its final stages, Croatia ramped up their intensity once more. Substitute Mario Pasalic unleashed a powerful shot that required a remarkable save from Benjamin Asare. Following a corner, Modric’s delivery found Vlasic, who scored with a precise header.

This goal marked Modric as the oldest player to provide an assist in World Cup history. In added time, when Abdul Fatawu ventured into Croatia’s box, it was Modric who intervened, retrieving the ball from him. His manager praised him extensively afterward.

“He is aware that this is his last World Cup and he is trying to do his best to say goodbye.” Dalic said. “He is aware that this is his last World Cup and he is trying to do his best to say goodbye.”
