Just five days remain for Harry Kane to seize the opportunity to win the Ballon d’Or. His path is clear: he must outshine Lionel Messi in Atlanta, then face either Kylian Mbappé or Lamine Yamal on Sunday. The England captain, once doubted during his youth at Tottenham, now confronts a significant challenge against Argentina on Wednesday.

This moment could define Kane’s career. The Bayern Munich forward has had an exceptional season, securing multiple domestic trophies and netting 73 goals across 64 matches for both club and country. However, the journey is far from over. He is on the brink of leading England to their first World Cup final abroad, a feat that demands him to eclipse one of football’s greatest talents.

Kane has previously expressed his ambition to reach the standards set by Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. His move to Bayern in 2023 finally provided him with the silverware that aligns with his talent. Yet, on the international stage, his ambitions remain unfulfilled. Fueled by a desire to rectify past disappointments with the national team, Kane now has the chance to be crowned the world’s best if he can propel England to World Cup victory for the first time in 60 years.

The tournament has seen Kane feeling in peak physical condition. Observing Messi, who continues to perform at 39, he contemplates his own longevity. It is easy to envision Kane still in England’s lineup at the next World Cup, even at 36, having meticulously studied how top athletes maintain their fitness. “That’s why you do all the work behind the scenes,” he remarked after scoring twice against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the last 32. “Those guys, Messi and Ronaldo, are at the pinnacle of that.”

However, Kane’s legacy as an all-time great beyond England hinges on more than just maintaining physical fitness; it demands standout performances in crucial matches. This is where Messi has consistently excelled. The Argentine legend, with a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, has been pivotal in high-stakes situations, such as scoring in the Champions League finals and leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup.

While Kane has his share of memorable moments, including a hat-trick for Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart and consistent scoring in the Champions League, he must keep delivering when it matters most. His record for England in knockout stages is impressive, having scored in five consecutive tournaments, but the pressure is mounting.

Producing results consistently is challenging. Kane claimed the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, but fatigue affected his performance in the latter stages, particularly during the semi-final against Croatia. Despite a rocky start at Euro 2020, where he faced criticism, he rebounded to score vital goals against Germany, Ukraine, and Denmark, yet faltered in the final against Italy, which ended in penalties.

The previous World Cup was a painful experience for Kane, who scored a penalty but also missed one in the quarter-final against France. Following fitness issues at Euro 2024, where he did manage to score decisive goals, his tournament ended with disappointment after Gareth Southgate substituted him during the final against Spain.

Despite these setbacks, Kane has shown remarkable resilience, emerging stronger each time. This World Cup has showcased his talent, with six goals in as many games. He notably excelled against Mexico, assisting Jude Bellingham’s second goal and converting the winner from the penalty spot.

Though he struggled during the quarter-final against Norway, where the Miami conditions affected him, Kane remained on the field until the end of extra time. A competitor of his caliber will know that his contributions so far have not fully secured his legacy.

In the Atlanta Stadium, with its climate control, Kane will have a more favorable environment to face Argentina’s defenders Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez. Engaging with these two seasoned centre-backs will be a test, but if Kane can prevail, England’s chances will significantly improve.
