In the wake of Spain’s historic World Cup triumph over Argentina, more than a million fans are anticipated to gather in central Madrid on Monday evening to celebrate the national team’s return.
La Roja secured their victory with a 1-0 win against Argentina during the final held in New Jersey on Sunday night. The team received a hero’s welcome upon landing at Madrid’s Barajas airport at 2:30 PM local time on Monday.
Captain Rodri proudly displayed the trophy as he disembarked the plane, wearing his medal from the previous evening. The players posed for photographs before proceeding to terminal four, where excited supporters, adorned in Spain’s colors and waving the red-and-yellow rojigualda flag, awaited a glimpse of the champions.
The team’s first official engagement will be at Zarzuela Palace, located northwest of Madrid, where King Felipe and Queen Letizia will greet the players and staff around 4:30 PM. Following this, they will visit the Moncloa Palace for a meet-and-greet with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at approximately 6 PM.
The victory parade will begin in earnest as the team travels into the city by bus from Moncloa. The main festivities, including musical performances, are set to occur at Plaza de Cibeles, just outside Madrid’s city hall, drawing enormous crowds.
Madrid’s mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida, expressed to Radio Nacional de España that the city is preparing a fitting homecoming for the team. He praised the peaceful and jubilant atmosphere following Spain’s victory.
“Even though there were thousands and thousands of people on the streets last night, there were practically no incidents in the city,” he remarked.
“We’re getting everything ready for tonight and the musical events should start at Cibeles from about 6pm, with the parade scheduled to start at 7pm – but all this is depends on various factors … The thing we’re focusing on is how to celebrate and greet a team that will live for ever in our memory.”
This victory marks Spain’s second men’s World Cup title, following their win against the Netherlands in South Africa in 2010. The match was closely followed by hundreds of thousands of Spaniards, who gathered in bars, parks, and on giant screens in Madrid to witness the historic event. The media has described this as “a unique collective experience” driven by a young team reflecting the best of a modern, diverse, and determined nation.
The win has also received enthusiastic praise from political leaders across the country.

The Spanish postal service, Correos, has announced the issuance of a special stamp to commemorate what it has called “one of the greatest achievements in the history of Spanish sport.” The red stamp will display the word CAMPEONES and feature two stars, representing Spain’s World Cup victories.
