FIFA has initiated an inquiry into the incidents of violence that erupted after Spain’s victory in the World Cup final on Sunday, which may result in suspensions for several players from Argentina.
During the chaotic aftermath, Nahuel Molina was seen striking Spain’s captain Rodri in the stomach as he entered the pitch following the final whistle. Additionally, a significant altercation occurred at the halfway line, where Leandro Paredes appeared to choke Eric García before throwing Gavi to the ground.
Paredes received a red card from referee Slavko Vincic, who had already sent off Enzo Fernández near the end of regular time. Vincic also issued bookings to three other Argentina players and the team’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni.
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the Fifa World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code (FDC), the Fifa Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,”
FIFA stated in a press release. The organization is also scrutinizing Argentina’s behavior following their semi-final win over England, during which players celebrated with a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” smuggled into the Atlanta Stadium by supporters.
FIFA prohibits political expressions by players or teams, which could lead to further sanctions for those involved.
