Dalic Warns Croatia’s World Cup Opener Against England Could Spell Disaster

Dalic admits Croatia’s World Cup opener against England ‘can destroy everything’

Zlatko Dalic perceives Croatia’s initial World Cup clash against England as crucial for their chances this summer, acknowledging that a less challenging opening match might have alleviated the pressure on a squad facing fitness and form struggles.

Before heading to the United States, Croatia secured a 2-1 victory over Slovenia in their final warm-up game. However, as they prepare to face England on June 17, Dalic is likely to encounter several selection dilemmas. The Manchester City duo of Mateo Kovacic and Josip Gvardiol are both returning from injuries, adding to the apprehension that Dalic’s team, which placed third in 2022 and was the runner-up four years ago, may start the tournament on shaky ground.

“Perhaps, because the first match can ruin everything,” Dalic remarked when questioned if he would have preferred to face England later in the group stage. “During Euro 2024, we suffered a 3-0 defeat to Spain in our opening game and fell apart, unable to recover. Yet in previous tournaments, we triumphed over Nigeria [in 2018] and drew with Morocco [in 2022].

“We cannot change anything now. The first match is the most critical. Against England, we will compete fiercely, strive to perform our best, and aim for victory.”

Luka Modric, who donned a protective mask while recovering from a fractured cheekbone, scored a stunning goal in Varazdin. However, he is among several of Dalic’s key players who lack match sharpness. “Kovacic, Gvardiol, and Modric have not played extensively for quite some time and are not in peak condition,” he noted. “Kovacic, in particular, has hardly played this season, and his presence is vital. It’s challenging, and we need time. Gvardiol is back, but I recognize they aren’t at their optimal levels. Our roster is limited, and these are some of our most pivotal players.”

Dalic, who led Croatia to victory over England in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, refrained from commenting on any lingering psychological effects on their rivals, highlighting that England has defeated Croatia on two occasions since then. He praised the strength of Thomas Tuchel’s squad and commended their extensive preparation in the US. England arrived in Miami a week ago, even though their match against Croatia in Dallas is scheduled for June 17.

“They are a formidable team from the world’s best league, playing an aggressive and rapid style,” he expressed. “We will need to elevate our game.

“I watched their match against New Zealand, but it was not a true test; it was different. It illustrates how serious a team is when they arrive in America nearly 20 days prior to prepare thoroughly. However, I remain optimistic and will motivate my team to give our utmost to secure a win.”
