Trump’s presence at the event brought an unusual conclusion to a night where he largely stayed out of the spotlight. This would have pleased American sports fans, who have developed a negative sentiment regarding his involvement in their favorite events, akin to a dreaded omen. The New York Knicks suffered a defeat in the NBA finals while Trump was present at Madison Square Garden, where he also faced significant jeers. Earlier in the tournament, the US team endured a 4-1 loss against Belgium after Trump intervened with Infantino to have striker Folarin Balogun’s red card rescinded.
While Trump may not have directly influenced the outcome of the World Cup final, he watched the match from a secure, glass-enclosed suite with notable figures including Infantino, Spain’s King Felipe VI, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. At one moment during the second half, Trump was observed engaging in conversation with Carney.
What transpired outside the presumably bulletproof glass was a grueling 120 minutes of intense football, a matchup that seemed to demand a sideshow. Trump would not step into that role until later. He briefly appeared on the stadium’s video screens following the national anthem, eliciting a mixed response from the crowd with some boos. Television coverage showed him touching the trophy from his seat early in the match and chatting with Melania Trump in the 85th minute, yet he was not featured on the stadium screens during the actual gameplay.
The unfriendly reception that had characterized his previous sporting appearances resurfaced when he descended from his suite to the field to present the World Cup trophy alongside Infantino and other dignitaries, where he was met with widespread booing.
The trophy presentation proceeded as expected until a pivotal moment arrived. Trump handed out medals to the players, shaking hands and offering congratulations with a minimal fuss. Infantino was left to jog over and urge him to exit the scene. Ultimately, as Rodri lifted the trophy, Trump remained in view, and by the time the confetti showered the ground, he had finally departed, having stayed just long enough to appear in the frame.
