Enzo Fernández Shines for Argentina Amid Uncertain Chelsea Future

Enzo Fernández shows real quality for Argentina but Chelsea future is up in the air

Enzo Fernández scores Argentina’s equaliser against England

Enzo Fernández displayed a potent blend of flair and tenacity as Argentina triumphed over England in their semi-final clash. His initial act in Wednesday’s match in Atlanta involved a robust challenge on Elliot Anderson, catching the head of Manchester City’s recent £116m acquisition. Though he avoided a booking, Fernández capitalized on favorable officiating, showcasing his versatility once Argentina regained control following an early second-half setback.

Much has been discussed regarding England’s struggle to maintain their lead. Fans of the Premier League expressed frustration over the lack of efforts to disrupt Fernández’s rhythm. The Chelsea midfielder excels when in possession but can be vulnerable when opponents bypass him. This flaw has posed challenges for Chelsea and will weigh on their decision regarding his potential sale this summer. However, against England, Fernández found himself with ample freedom during the latter half, orchestrating play alongside Alexis Mac Allister and demonstrating his big-game mentality by scoring an equalizer with a curling shot from 25 yards in the 85th minute.

Fernández clearly identified a vulnerability in the England defense, taking four shots from distance, one of which caught Jordan Pickford off guard. England failed to address this threat, allowing Fernández to operate without hindrance. Statistics from the match reveal that he won just three of his nine ground duels, yet he led the pitch with 104 touches and achieved an impressive 98% pass completion rate.

Fernández relished the moment, sharing a light-hearted image on his Instagram stories featuring him laughing alongside Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes at Argentina’s training facility, accompanied by the tune of Wonderwall. While this may not endear him to English supporters, he seems unfazed. Notably, he appears captivated by the prospect of relocating to Spain. Following a confrontation with Chelsea at the end of the last season, which resulted in a two-match ban for Fernández, it will be intriguing to see if his World Cup performances will persuade Real Madrid to pursue him.

From a scouting viewpoint, Fernández could not have chosen a better opponent for Sunday’s final. Real Madrid, who recently acquired Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, will undoubtedly take notice if he shines against Spain. José Mourinho is in need of midfield reinforcements, an area where Madrid has struggled recently. With Luka Modric and Toni Kroos leaving, a creative gap has emerged. Although Madrid publicly denied any interest in Fernández this month, rumors suggest they still hold an interest in the Argentinian.

Chelsea’s asking price of £120m is considered excessive. There is also a perspective that Fernández’s performances internationally should prompt Chelsea to reconsider a sale if Madrid expresses interest. Xabi Alonso, the current manager at Stamford Bridge, seeks players with grit. Although Fernández has not always shone in the spotlight, he has faced turmoil with his club while finding stability with his national team. He appears more comfortable donning the Argentina jersey and has emerged as a leader on the international stage, potentially bringing that same leadership to Chelsea under Alonso.

Fernández has proven to be a clutch player, adept at making crucial contributions for Chelsea, having netted 12 goals last season. He times his runs with precision and boasts impressive finishing skills. Additionally, he demonstrated his aerial threat when he eliminated Egypt in the last 16 with a stunning header in added time.

This is just one instance of the former Benfica midfielder stepping up for Argentina in pivotal moments. During their victorious 2022 World Cup campaign, he initially found himself on the bench. At just 21, he awaited his opportunity under Lionel Scaloni, which came when Argentina needed a victory against Mexico in their second match. Coming on with the score still level in the 57th minute, he played a critical role as Messi scored shortly thereafter, and Fernández sealed the match with a beautiful strike in the 87th minute.

After that, there was no turning back for Fernández. He became a regular fixture in midfield, earning the title of young player of the tournament. His star rose quickly, leading to his transfer to Chelsea for £106.7m just a month after the World Cup final. However, his journey has not been without challenges. He faced backlash for being caught on video participating in a racist chant regarding the France team after Argentina’s Copa América victory in 2024, necessitating reconciliation with his Chelsea teammates that summer. Fernández publicly apologized for the incident in an interview last year.

The question remains whether his efforts will be sufficient to earn him a place in the same Bernabéu dressing room as Kylian Mbappé. His performance against Spain’s elite midfield could significantly influence his future. Over his time in England, Fernández has transformed his physique, now leading Argentina in sprints and high-speed running. However, he will encounter a tougher challenge against Rodri, Dani Olmo, and Fabián Ruiz than he did with Anderson and Declan Rice. If he aspires to regain his world champion status, his level of play will need to elevate once more.
