Folarin Balogun Cleared to Play for US Against Belgium After Red Card Suspension Lifted

Folarin Balogun eligible to play for US v Belgium as Fifa rescinds suspension for red card

Folarin Balogun, the forward for the United States men’s national soccer team, is set to feature in the Round of 16 match against Belgium on Monday. This follows Fifa’s announcement that it has lifted the one-match suspension imposed on him for a red card received during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This development significantly enhances the US team’s chances as they strive to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002. Balogun has been a key player, netting three goals in his three starts throughout the tournament. His absence would have left US coach Mauricio Pochettino searching for alternatives in the offensive line.

Fifa’s Decision and Conditions

Fifa’s disciplinary committee stated that its decision aligns with Article 27 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code, which permits the rescinding of red cards. Balogun will be under a probationary period of one year, meaning the red card is suspended rather than completely overturned. Should he commit another serious foul during this period, the suspension will be enforced.

Previously, Article 27 was invoked to allow Cristiano Ronaldo to participate in Portugal’s opening matches of the World Cup after he received a red card against the Republic of Ireland.

Reactions and Incident Details

“another infringement of a similar nature and gravity,” a statement from US Soccer read. “We accept the decision of the disciplinary committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow,”

Balogun’s red card stemmed from a seemingly minor clash with a Bosnia and Herzegovina defender during a last-32 match earlier in the week. No foul was initially called, but video assistant referee (VAR) later reviewed the incident and recommended a check, leading to a straight red card for violent conduct after it was determined that Balogun had stepped on the defender’s ankle.

The decision surprised many, including commentators and players, who felt the action was unintentional. “Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.” Pochettino commented post-match. “For me? Never a red card,”

Balogun’s Reflections

Initially, Fifa and US Soccer officials indicated that the one-game suspension attached to a red card could not be appealed. However, on Friday, Balogun described the experience as “Never an intention to step on the player. It was a normal action in football that happened by accident.” and received praise for maintaining composure after what many considered a harsh judgment.

“I never want to react out of anger and out of emotion,” Balogun stated. “There’s still lots of people we’re inspiring, little kids, boys and girls who are watching, and we have to show them the correct way to handle things, even when you think it’s unjust.”
