Kylian Mbappé Confronts World Cup Disappointment as France Faces New Challenges

Kylian Mbappé feels sands of time shifting as France suffer fresh World Cup angst

Kylian Mbappé hinted just weeks ago that he might explore opportunities in Florida. With a playful demeanor, he disclosed that David Beckham had been discussing a potential move to Major League Soccer, teasing the idea of reuniting with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.

“We will see, I don’t know,” he remarked. “The American culture is different. There are no limits to ambitions, I like it.”

However, as he prepares to step onto the field in Miami this Saturday, Mbappé carries the weight of unfulfilled dreams and dashed hopes. Although the upcoming third-place playoff holds some significance due to the prominent players involved, it cannot compare to the disappointment of missing out on another final. The pain from France’s semi-final loss to Spain, marking their third defeat against the European champions in as many years, will linger into the summer.

France’s recent performance on Tuesday has accelerated the feeling that time is slipping away for Mbappé. It seems particularly harsh that he will be 31 by the time the next World Cup arrives. If he continues at his current pace, he could approach 700 career appearances by then, and there’s no certainty that his physically demanding style of play will endure into his thirties. Though he has already cemented his legacy, this tournament presented a prime opportunity for a mid-career reaffirmation.

There remains a chance for a diluted version of such a milestone. Mbappé shares the top spot with Messi for the Golden Boot race, each having scored eight goals, though Messi currently leads with four assists to Mbappé’s three.

Yet, that accomplishment feels insufficient to him. His frustration was palpable in a recent critique that could be interpreted as a subtle criticism of coach Didier Deschamps for tactical missteps.

France struggled in midfield, with Dani Olmo providing balance that Michael Olise could not match, leaving Mbappé largely isolated until he attempted a few ambitious shots in the later stages. The team failed to effectively get the ball to him earlier, resulting in a collective strategy that relied too heavily on the hope that individual brilliance would prevail.

The disappointment is magnified by the fact that Mbappé had started the tournament strongly, shaking off a lackluster end to the season at Real Madrid and powering through early obstacles. The sense of unfinished business was unmistakable.

“I would change Argentina 2022,” he admitted when asked how he might alter the past. “That final comes to mind more than the one we won.”

The hat-trick he scored in Lusail and the subsequent penalty shootout loss continue to be a painful memory. A rematch against Messi and Argentina in New Jersey could have offered a chance to rewrite that narrative and solidify his status as the best in the world.

Now, however, a less illustrious chapter begins. “We have to move on to the next chapter,” Mbappé stated. “Because football waits for no one. We have to start over, put this failure behind us, and learn from it.”

There is no indication that he plans to step back from his commitments to the French national team. Zinedine Zidane is likely to succeed Deschamps, raising the intriguing possibility of whether the two greatest players in French football history can create a successful partnership.

Even if their collaboration resonates well, Zidane has been away from coaching for five years since departing Real Madrid. He and his captain must discover a way to harness those moments of brilliance while developing a cohesive strategy that has allowed Spain to consistently outpace France.

What version of Mbappé will France see in 2030? This may hinge on whether he finally secures a Champions League title, possibly alongside a European Championship win in two years. It would have seemed unimaginable back when he dazzled during the 2018 World Cup that twelve years could pass without him claiming another major title.

While opportunities will undoubtedly arise, the prospect of near misses is becoming a concerning topic of discussion. The idea of Mbappé lingering in the shadow of unfulfilled potential is likely unappealing to him.

Perhaps Beckham and Inter Miami will eventually lure Mbappé, just as Messi was enticed into a late-career role that has benefited his longevity with the Argentine national team. Such a move could keep the World Cup hopes alive.

In theory, Mbappé could still lead France’s aspirations in Saudi Arabia in 2034 and beyond. However, witnessing his expression contort with pain at Dallas Stadium left many wondering if his best chance to achieve those grand ambitions has slipped away.
