Socceroos Express Frustration Over Referee’s Performance in USA Loss

Socceroos aggrieved by referee’s ‘stinker’ in World Cup defeat to USA

The Socceroos have voiced their discontent with referee Felix Zwayer, describing his officiating as a “If you look at how the referee was today, [there’s] not much I can say about that,” following their 2-0 defeat to the USA in the World Cup match held in Seattle. The Australian team felt that they were victims of several questionable calls that impacted their performance.

One of the most contentious moments came with the USA’s second goal, awarded by the video assistant referee, which raised eyebrows due to the apparent offside position of a player near goalkeeper Patrick Beach during the sequence.

However, the primary complaint from the Socceroos revolved around multiple non-calls throughout the game. Connor Metcalfe seemed to be fouled in the penalty area, while forward Nestory Irankunda was taken down off the ball by American defender Chris Richards. Numerous appeals from players were disregarded by the referee.

Irankunda commented on the match, stating, “The ref was having a stinker today, but I mean it is what it is,” When pressed for more details, he did not hold back. “He was giving every call to the USA. I get it, but at the same time, we know there’s two teams on the field, so you have to give the calls both ways and he didn’t do that today.”

Coach Tony Popovic weighed in, noting that while the match was not particularly physical, the inconsistency in officiating was troubling. “I thought the referee gave too many fouls away, in all honesty, he said. “Sometimes you didn’t have to do much to win a foul, and on the other occasions you you had to do a fair bit to get one.” he remarked. “[The reaction] has got to be a positive one tomorrow,”

Despite the disappointment, the Socceroos retain confidence in their ability to turnaround their World Cup campaign. They found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime after being outmatched in the first half.

The match, played in front of a crowd of 68,000 at Seattle Stadium, ensured the USA’s advancement to the knockout stages, a fact solidified after Paraguay’s victory over Turkey. Australia’s prospects now hinge on their upcoming final group-stage game against Paraguay in San Francisco. A win or draw will secure their qualification for the next round, but a loss could spell the end of their tournament hopes.

Captain Harry Souttar expressed disappointment after the game, acknowledging the frustrations of the afternoon but maintaining that the Socceroos can still advance. “We can look back at the game properly and take bits that we did well and that we didn’t do well – there’s a lot of them.” he said. “We’re in that position where we know we can go through, if we get a result. So yeah, full focus and positivity has got to be [there] for that last game,”

He added, “We didn’t start well enough,”

In the second half, the Socceroos improved their performance but failed to find a way back into the match against a determined and composed USA side.

“They were in our faces, we couldn’t keep the ball down, we were always trying to get in behind early, we just didn’t really show that composure that I think you think you needed. But the reaction was good.” Souttar remarked. “The boss always talks about the belief in the squad and I think maybe in the second half we really truly believed that we would get back into it,”

Cristian Volpato

Substitutes Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, who scored against Turkey last week, made impactful contributions alongside Cristian Volpato, who debuted in the World Cup.

Midfielder Aiden O’Neill emphasized the team’s belief moving forward, highlighting the positives from their second-half performance. He noted Volpato’s significant influence, along with the other substitutes, which helped shift the momentum in the match.

“Maybe you could see that on the field, and we gave everything. I think everyone can see that.” O’Neill said. “I don’t know if it’s the occasion, but we looked sluggish, heavy legged, dull,”

Popovic struggled to explain the lackluster first-half performance. “They won every duel, they won every second ball and when you do that, it makes it very difficult to get any, gain any momentum.” he reflected. “We’ve got to accept what happened today, and I’m really delighted with the second half, to be honest, with all the players that came on, and the players that didn’t have a good first half,”

He expressed satisfaction with the team’s response in the second half, viewing it as a foundation for their next match. “It’s a World Cup. We move on to Paraguay and we’ll work hard to be ready for that.” he concluded. “It’s a World Cup. We move on to Paraguay and we’ll work hard to be ready for that.”
