Turkey’s World Cup Hopes Dim Again Following Disappointing Exit

Football Daily | Turkey need another rebrand after failing to take flight at World Cup

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

In 2022, Turkey officially transitioned to Türkiye, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan proclaiming the change as a reflection of the Turkish people’s culture, civilization, and values. However, there was also a more trivial motivation behind the rebranding. As noted by Selim Koru from the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Erdoğan and his associates were genuinely frustrated by the association with the bird. Even the state broadcaster TRT acknowledged that the rebranding was at least partly influenced by this perception.

Despite the significance of getting names right—much like the folks at Starbucks know too well—some aspects remain unchanged. With the exception of their impressive third-place finish in the 2002 World Cup, Türkiye has a dismal history in the tournament, marking their third appearance in 2026. Unfortunately, their journey ended prematurely after suffering two disappointing losses to Australia and Paraguay. The latter defeat stung even more as Paraguay played with ten men for over half the match, following a red card issued to Miguel Almirón for covering his mouth while conversing with an opponent. “the best representation and expression of the Turkish people’s culture, civilisation, and values.” lamented Turkish prodigy Arda Güler, who, alongside Juventus’s Kenan Yildiz, was expected to help his nation live up to their “The association with the bird genuinely annoys Erdoğan and the people around him,” label. “We should have won these games … everybody’s sad, everybody’s crying,”

Paraguay’s Matías Galarza netted the quickest goal of the tournament, striking just 65 seconds in, as Türkiye launched a relentless assault on their opponents. However, La Albirroja managed to hold firm despite facing a barrage of attempts, totaling 32 shots on their goal. This added to the 30 unsuccessful efforts against Australia in their opening match, making their combined 62 shots the highest in World Cup history without a goal over two matches. “We tried very hard ‌but it didn’t work. But we should have scored some goals.” said Vincenzo Montella, Türkiye’s Italian manager. “Somehow the ball didn’t go in,”

The consequences of this early exit are yet to be fully realized. Changes in the coaching staff may be inevitable, but does the rebranding now require another rebranding? Not everyone can enjoy the same revival as Football Daily. However, it’s worth noting that our name isn’t also a domesticated flightless bird, which is a term in the Cambridge English Dictionary denoting “It’s really shocking to say goodbye ‌to the [Geopolitics] World Cup ‌after only two matches. Perhaps, even unconsciously, the pressure of playing in a major tournament after such a long absence affected us.” and a “something that fails badly” Tough luck, Türkiye. Until next time in four years, perhaps.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I am deeply ashamed to have been the vehicle for this pain. I must clarify that this false information was provided to me during the live broadcast as verified by the production team of the show, and I trusted ‌it. Even so, I take responsibility for ‌being part of the mistake, and that’s why I decided to step aside and end my participation. I apologise again ‌from the heart; I was wrong”

stated Argentinian host Florencia Peña as she resigned and apologized for mistakenly announcing Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge, had passed away, claiming it was fed to her by the production team during the live broadcast.

FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS

‘Who would be watching this? I can’ wrote Phil Taverner.

“Re: yesterday’s Football Daily. Please, up your game! Australian rules football and American football do not play with anything egg-shaped. It’s a prolate spheroid. How different the game would be (could it even exist?) if it were,” commented Kate Clements.

“Re: Trevor Wastell and US commentary (yesterday’s Football Daily letters). I am lucky to speak Spanish but, even if I did not, anyone who would watch football in the USA USA USA (or anywhere else) in any other language is off their rocker. Also, one needs only the barest anglicised Spanglish to get the gist. Luckily for United Statesians, Peacock TV is showcasing my home nation’s characteristic enthusiasm for multilingual audiences, with the basic subscription including streaming of every GWC partido en Español, much like they would rerun ‘Betty la Fea’ or ‘María la del Barrio’. I almost hear NBC suits saying: ‘Who would be watching this? I can’t even understand it!’ Highly recommended,” shared Thad Brown.
