Belgium Secures Knockout Stage Spot with Dominant 5-1 Win Over New Zealand

Five-star Belgium through as New Zealand sent packing from World Cup

Belgium showcased their strength with a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand, securing their place in the knockout stage of the World Cup. Leandro Trossard emerged as the star of the match, netting two goals as Belgium clinched the top spot in Group G, setting up a meeting with one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The match took a turn when a penalty awarded to Belgium was revoked following a VAR review. Belgium broke the scoreless stalemate in the 28th minute, as a corner from Kevin De Bruyne deflected off New Zealand defender Tim Payne, allowing Trossard to slot the ball home from close range.

Trossard struck again just five minutes into the second half, receiving a precise pass from De Bruyne and firing the ball into the net at the second attempt after his initial shot had been blocked. De Bruyne then added his name to the scoresheet in the 66th minute with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box.

Despite the setback, New Zealand’s Elijah Just managed to score a late consolation goal. Substitute players Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers then sealed the match with additional goals, ensuring Belgium topped the group ahead of Egypt.
