England’s memorable victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16, winning 3-2, was marred by an unfortunate injury to Jordan Henderson, who fell into an advertising board during post-match celebrations.
The former Liverpool captain, who remained on the bench throughout the match, was promptly taken to the hospital where it was confirmed that he had suffered a broken wrist, ruling him out of the tournament.
As players celebrated in front of their supporters shortly after the final whistle, medical staff were seen hurrying to the scene. Henderson was provided with oxygen before being transported off the field on a stretcher.
“He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have got everything under control probably. Best not to give too much detail when I don’t know too much what is going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.” said Jude Bellingham. “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Later, England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel commented, “Jordan injured his wrist; it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure; the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Henderson received a yellow card during the tense match due to a sideline altercation. His only participation in the tournament thus far came when he entered as a substitute in the 84th minute against Panama.
England secured their victory against Mexico with two goals from Bellingham and a penalty converted by Harry Kane, managing to hold on for the win after Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half for a foul on Jesús Gallardo.
