DR Congo Achieves Historic World Cup Win, Advances to Face England

DR Congo set up last-32 meeting with England after comeback win over Uzbekistan

Eldor Shomurodov puts Uzbekistan ahead

In a remarkable display, DR Congo triumphed over Uzbekistan with a 3-1 victory, marking their first-ever advancement to the World Cup’s last 32. Yoane Wissa was pivotal, scoring two goals that propelled the Congolese team into the knockout stage.

The match in Atlanta began with a stunning goal from Eldor Shomurodov, who lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi to give Uzbekistan an early lead. However, Wissa equalized from the penalty spot before Fiston Mayele’s goal sent the predominantly Congolese crowd into jubilation.

Wissa capped off a memorable evening with a well-placed strike in stoppage time, securing his third goal of the tournament.

“We’ll start work immediately on preparing,” said the DRC head coach, Sébastien Desabre. “We’ve got a few players in the squad who play at clubs in the English league, so they will help us, but we’ll prepare in the best way we can ‌for what is going ‌to be a very big match for us.”

Uzbekistan entered the match aware that their chances of progressing were slim due to the significant goal difference needed. Nevertheless, head coach Fabio Cannavaro emphasized the importance of winning to leave a positive legacy for their first World Cup appearance, driving his players to start strong.

Shomurodov initially thought he had scored again just 30 seconds into the match, but a flag for offside halted his celebrations. However, he didn’t have to wait long, as just ten minutes later, he scored with a deft lob over Mpasi from a tight angle.

Nathanaël Mbuku nearly equalized for DR Congo with a spectacular shot into the top corner, but a VAR review deemed his earlier foul on Sherzod Nasrullaev too soft, nullifying the goal.

As DR Congo struggled to find their rhythm, a reckless challenge from Manchester City’s Abdukodir Khusanov on Wissa provided a lifeline. Wissa converted the penalty, igniting a wave of excitement among the nearly 70,000 spectators.

Just two minutes later, the fans witnessed a historic moment. A deflected shot from Meschack Elia allowed Mayele to sneak ahead of Nematov and flick the ball into the net.

Wissa then sealed the comeback with an impressive curling shot from the edge of the area, ensuring a dramatic finish.

“The players gave everything. They are sad in the changing room. They suffer more than anyone in Uzbekistan.” Cannavaro remarked. “The players gave everything. They are sad in the changing room. They suffer more than anyone in Uzbekistan.”

DR Congo’s journey continues a remarkable trend for African teams in this World Cup, with only Tunisia out of the ten participating nations having been eliminated. Algeria could potentially join the eight nations advancing to the knockout stage following their final group matches.
