USA’s World Cup Journey Ends with Defeat to Belgium in Round of 16

Ragged USA crash out of World Cup with last-16 defeat to Belgium

The United States’ efforts to overturn Folarin Balogun’s red card may have unintentionally unearthed deeper issues surrounding the national team’s integrity and performance. As the nation began to embrace the squad, eager for a narrative of triumph in soccer, concerns about fairness and propriety emerged. A star forward, who committed an unintentional error and handled the situation with grace, became a focal point instead. Ultimately, the US’s World Cup aspirations came to a disappointing end.

In a decisive 4-1 loss to Belgium in the knockout stage, the US’s hopes of altering the global perception of American soccer evaporated, mirroring their previous exits in prior World Cups. The rallying cry of “What the hell just happened?” gave way to feelings of regret and confusion over missed opportunities, as fans pondered, “From the beginning, we didn’t connect with the game. Even when we scored the goal, we conceded the next action. Congratulations Belgium, they were better than us,”

Throughout the tournament, the US displayed moments of brilliance and resilience, showcasing a level of play previously unseen in their World Cup history. They managed to score remarkable goals characterized by creativity and skill, while their defense showed impressive fortitude. However, this match ended in disappointment due to lapses in defensive assignments, careless turnovers, and a critical error from goalkeeper Matt Freese, which sealed their fate.

“We didn’t show what this team can show.”

US coach Mauricio Pochettino remarked following the match. “We didn’t show what this team can show.”

Given the unfolding drama of the preceding days, the starting lineup for the US was unsurprising, featuring Balogun, who had recently regained his place in the squad amid controversy. His inclusion was anticipated after his reinstatement sparked significant discussion.

On this occasion, however, it was Belgium’s manager, Rudi Garcia, who surprised observers by leaving out key players Kevin De Bruyne and Jérémy Doku from the starting lineup, despite their fitness. Nicolas Raskin stepped up as the central playmaker, and Dodi Lukébakio took Doku’s position on the wing, a player who had previously exploited US defensive weaknesses in a friendly match.

These lingering concerns regarding the US defense were soon validated. In the eighth minute, Amadou Onana maneuvered through several challenges to find Lukébakio, who pierced the US defense with a well-placed cross that Youri Tielemans failed to capitalize on. The immediate threat subsided, but it was just the beginning.

Shortly thereafter, Belgium struck first. A long ball from the back caught Alex Freeman out of position, allowing Leandro Trossard to gain control with a deft touch. Raskin skillfully redirected the ball past several US defenders to present Charles De Ketelaere with an easy finish, dampening the spirits of the US supporters who filled the stadium. For the second time in this World Cup, a promising US team faced serious adversity.

As had happened in their previous match against Turkey, the US faltered under pressure. Weston McKennie, usually a steady presence, contributed to Belgium’s momentum with uncharacteristic mistakes, while Christian Pulisic struggled to maintain possession in midfield. Chris Richards nearly handed De Ketelaere a chance at goal, forcing the team into frantic defending to avert conceding a second goal.

Malik Tillman’s unexpected equalizer provided a glimmer of hope. Balogun played a pivotal role, earning a free-kick near the box after showcasing impressive hold-up play. Tillman, reminiscent of his previous performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina, executed a beautifully arched shot over the wall, benefitting from a deflection off Hans Vanaken that caught Thibaut Courtois off guard. With this goal, Tillman entered the record books as only the second player to score two direct free-kicks in a single World Cup.

However, the US’s hopes of a comeback were short-lived. The Belgian threat resurfaced, this time from the right flank. Trossard exploited space behind Freeman, delivering a precise cross to De Ketelaere, who outmaneuvered Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson to score.

In an effort to shift momentum in the second half, Pochettino substituted Gio Reyna for Sergiño Dest. The US started brightly, but their resurgence was soon overshadowed by a critical error from Freese. It was unclear why he ventured so far from his line to challenge a long ball in the 57th minute, and his subsequent hesitation allowed Vanaken to convert the opportunity into a goal, leaving Freese and Ream devastated.

This appeared to signal the end of the contest, but it wasn’t quite over yet. Romelu Lukaku, who entered the match in the 67th minute, sealed the US’s fate in stoppage time with a well-placed finish, leading to a disheartening scene as US players collapsed to the ground in disbelief. Richards, visibly affected, remained on the pitch for several moments before being consoled by teammates.

This match represented a harsh transition from potential to reality for the US team. They shifted from confidence to controversy, and ultimately to an overwhelming sense of defeat. The once vibrant squad faded under the overcast skies typical of the Pacific Northwest. Fans are left hoping that in four years, the team will emerge rejuvenated, ready to move beyond the disappointments of this match.
