Merlin, the beloved pet duck dressed in a miniature Mexico jersey, has gained viral fame as an unofficial mascot for the World Cup. On Monday, he made a memorable appearance alongside Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The duck confidently waddled onto the stage at the start of Sheinbaum’s regular morning press briefing, taking a seat typically occupied by ministers. Unfazed by the spotlight, Merlin quacked a few times, much to the delight of those in attendance.

“We feel very honoured to be here with the president, it is an honour for us to stand before you and for the whole world to see the beautiful side of Mexico,” expressed Karla Gómez, the owner of Merlin.

Merlin’s rise to fame began during celebratory events following Mexico’s victory over South Africa, where he was spotted mingling among fans on the bustling Reforma avenue on June 11. Since then, he has captured the hearts of many and become a standout figure during the World Cup.

Gómez hopes to establish Merlin as a registered trademark, believing that his newfound popularity could provide support for their family, particularly for her eldest son, who has a mental health condition.

Sheinbaum announced that assistance will be provided to Merlin’s family, though specifics were not disclosed. “Today we brought the family that has Merlin the duck as their pet, because he has been a symbol of the World Cup, a symbol of what Mexican families stand for, of who we are as Mexican families, and that is above all else, it is what the world is seeing from Mexico today,” Sheinbaum stated.

According to Gómez, Merlin is the “boss” of her street vending business, where she sells beverages. She mentioned that while he enjoys a balanced diet, he particularly relishes a pork taco on Sundays. At two years old, Merlin became part of the family as a gift from a customer and usually wears shoes to protect his webbed feet, as he enjoys walking.
